Our St. John the Baptist eighth grade students participated in the 2022 National History Day District Competition at Peru State College last month. This year’s national theme is “Debate and Diplomacy.”
On Thursday, winners of the district competition were announced during a virtual awards celebration. We are excited to announce that SIX of our students PLACED in the contest, with FIVE out of the six advancing to the STATE COMPETITION on April 9th at Nebraska Wesleyan. 🥇1st Place: Brooklyn Walton and Mikena Haag — “How the Attack on Pearl Harbor Changed Lives” (Advances to State)
INDIVIDUAL DOCUMENTARY:
🥇1st Place: Nora Koelzer — “Temperance Backs Organized Crime” (Advances to State)
🎖2nd Place: Drue Weeda — “Nuclear Energy Controversy and Reasoning” (Advances to State)
🎖4th Place: Laney Van Erdewyk — “The Kansas Nebraska Act of 1854”
INDIVIDUAL PAPER:

8th grade students participating in National History Day
Vance Poppleton, Parker Smith and Teagan Glup also competed in History Day entering a project for the Group Exhibit category. Their project was titled “ Standing Bull: Fight for Rights.”
Mrs. Virginia Cardwell, StJB 8th grade teacher, sponsored the project for the school, providing guidance and assistance to students throughout the three-month project process.
“I am so PROUD of these students because they have proven themselves to be such amazing researchers, hard-workers, and very talented individuals,” said Mrs. Cardwell.
Nebraska National History Day (NE:NHD) is a non-profit education program based in Lincoln, NE. Established in 1985, NE:NHD offers academic programs that engage middle- and high-school students throughout Nebraska annually in conducting original research on historical topics of interest. These research-based projects are entered into contests at the local level, where the top student entries have the opportunity to advance to the State Contest at Nebraska Wesleyan University in Lincoln. Top ranking state contest projects have the opportunity to advance to the National Contest held at University of Maryland at College Park. National History Day seeks to improve the quality of history education by providing professional development opportunities and curriculum materials for educators.
