Fifth grader Makayla Klinefelter’s poem titled “Voice Emotions” was selected to be part of Opera Omaha’s 2022-23 Poetry & Music Project.
Because Makayla’s poem was selected for the project, it will be set to music by professional composers Gabrielle Herbst and J.E. Hernández. Makayla will have the opportunity to further develop her piece by participating in an upcoming music workshop with the composer. The original works will be performed by an Opera Omaha artist and students from University of Nebraska – Omaha School of Music, premiering at a free live concert on May 7 at the Benson Theatre.
Makayla’s poem was among 16 original poems, submitted by Nebraska students in grades 3 through 12. Opera Omaha received a total of 135 entries from 117 poets across 14 Nebraska counties.
