StJB was well represented at National History Day on Friday, February 22nd, with 16 students from 7th and 8th grade participating in the District Competition at Peru State College. This year’s national theme is “Triumph and Tragedy in History.”

Seven students placed in the competition and two of the projects earned special awards.

RyAnne Carroll (8th grade):
1st Place Junior Individual Documentary
Documentary Title: “Edgar Allan Poe”

Peyton Blankman and Isabella HajekJones (8th grade)
1st Place Junior Group Performance
Performance Title: “A Triumph Against the Current: The Life of Susan LaFlesche Picotte”

Miles Poppleton and Jayger Haag (7th grade):
1st Place Junior Group Exhibit
Arbor Day Lodge Historical Park Special Award
Project Title: “Andrew Poppleton: A Triumphant Voice for Human Rights”

Their project displayed a sword that was presented to Andrew J Poppleton by General George Crook after the Chief Standing Bear trial in 1879.

Matthew Zitek (8th grade) and Emily Zitek (7th grade)
3rd Place Junior Group Exhibit
Lewis and Clark “We Proceeded On” Award
Project Title: “The Transcontinental Railroad: The Triumph that Shaped America”

These seven students will advance to the state competition on April 6 at Nebraska Wesleyan in Lincoln. Congratulations to all the students for their hard work on projects. A special thanks to Mrs. Reinsch and to everyone who supported the students in the research and creation of their projects.
